This is ZIP-code income distribution, not migration or net wealth. Tax year 2022 statistics primarily cover 2022 Form 1040 returns filed during calendar year 2023, with some prior-year returns used as proxies for late filings. Tax-return addresses may differ from actual residence, and nonfilers are not represented.
N1 is the number of returns; N2 is the number of individuals represented. A00100 is adjusted gross income (AGI), Form 1040 line 11. IRS dollar amounts are in thousands; this portal multiplies A00100 by 1,000. Average AGI = dollar AGI ÷ returns; it is not median, per-person, or household income. Bracket share = bracket returns ÷ official all-bracket ZIP returns.
The official all-bracket file supplies ZIP totals; six bracket records come from the AGI file. Counts are rounded to the nearest 10. Disclosure protection combines small cells with another AGI class, excludes some items, and suppresses dominant-return amounts. Missing brackets and zero reported cells must not be interpreted as proof of no income. A combined bracket may exceed its nominal range.
00000 denotes a state total; 99999 denotes “other” ZIP codes, including ZIPs with fewer than 100 returns, single buildings, and nonresidential ZIPs. These records are excluded from ZIP rankings. State summaries use 00000 directly, include 99999, and may differ from displayed ZIP sums. “All states” summaries sum the 51 state control records once, without adding ZIP or 99999 records; ZIP search and rankings span the 50 states and DC. They may also differ from other IRS state publications.
Negative-AGI returns, missing or inconsistent ZIP/state addresses, foreign and APO/FPO addresses, and listed territories are excluded. ZIP codes are tax-return postal identifiers, not Census ZCTAs. Do not infer precise neighborhood boundaries or individual taxpayers.
